CORONER REPORTS DEATH FROM HEAT

World War I Veteran Had Lived Near Winterset Several Months

After being missing since last Friday morning, the body of Dale Chapman, 63, of near Winterset, was found this Tuesday morning in a grader ditch along a rural road in Union township, northeast of Winterset.

The body was in a clump of high weeds in the ditch. It was found by three men, Ward Lecocq, Raymond Moore and Harold Smith, who were passing by.

They called officers and the body was removed to a Winterset funeral home. An investigation was made by officers headed by Coroner Paul Eggleston. The coroner later announced that death had resulted from heat prostration and that no inquest would be held.

Chapman was a veteran of World War I. He had been living here but a few months, making his home with his brother, Ben Chapman of Scott township. Since coming here, he spent much of his time riding a bicycle around the county.

He was last seen alive last Friday morning. When he did not return home Friday afternoon, his brother started a search for him. The bicycle he was riding was found in the road near the place of death that evening but the body in the ditch was not noticed at that time.

The body is to be taken to the Panther cemetery in Dallas county, where grave-side services will be held and burial made this Thursday at 2 p.m.
