County and City

Last Friday brought the news of two sad deaths in the neighborhood of Jackson and the west part of Douglas townships. One was Mr. John Barr, who lived on the Shull farm. His sickness was of short duration, and was a severe shock to family and friends, who are entitled to the sympathy of their acquaintances and which they will surely receive.

Obituary -

BARR — Died in Jackson township, Madison county, Iowa, Sept. 18th 1891, John M. Barr, aged 56 years, 5 months and 13 days.

He was born near Mansfield, Richland county, Ohio, April 5th, 1856, and was raised upon the farm. In his 19th year emigrated with his parents to Madison county, Iowa, where he lived till death. In the year 1884, his father died, leaving the widowed mother and seven children, three sons and four daughters. John M., the subject of this memoir, was the oldest son, and at the father’s death the care of the family fell upon him, laboring hard to provide for the wants of the mother, brothers and sisters.

About 15 years before his death, he embraced saving faith in his Savior and joined the U. P. church, living a faithful member therein for 12 years. Two years ago last winter, under the administration of Rev. H. C. Preston, of the Winterset circuit, he moved his membership by letter to the West Star M. E. church, taking a very active part in the interest and workings of the church, remaining a member of the same till he died.

On the first of September, 1891, he was taken with malarial and typhoid fevers, suffering much, but bearing his affliction with untiring patience and Christian resignation to the Divine will of Providence.

A short time before his death he told his mother he would not get well, telling her he wanted to go home. The last words he spoke were telling his brother to take good care of mother, and on Sept. 18th, at fifteen minutes past one o’clock the spirit of John M. Barr took its flight to God who gave it. On the following day the funeral services were conducted at the U. P. church, by the Rev. James Sawhill. A very impressive discourse was delivered from the words of scripture: John, “Jesus answered and said unto him, what I do thou knowest not now, but thou shalt know hereafter.”

It was a very large funeral, attended by many of the citizens of Jackson and Douglas townships, and a sad, sad day that will never be forgotten, for on that day occurred the funeral and burial of Miss Ora Comp, an associate and member of the same Sabbath school. The body was then taken to the cemetery and upon the coffin was laid beautiful wreathes of flowers by loving hands and then laid to rest in the silent home of the dead. An in this sad bereavement may the grace of our Heavenly Father comfort the hearts of the mother and children who were at the grave of the departed one, and of the absent sister Ida, and may you all meet in heaven is the prayer of the writer.
