Alice Compton

Alice Compton, 98, died Friday Nov. 16, 2007 at Pilgrim Manor Retirement Center in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Graveside services were held Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2007 in Earlham Cemetery, Earlham, with Pastor Linda Burnett of the Earlham Friends Church officiating.

Alice was born the daughter of Edmond (E.S.) and Elizabeth Compton on Feb. 26, 1909 in Earlham. Her Quaker family consisted of sisters Esther Compton, Mildred DeLay, and her brother Marion Compton, all deceased.

Alice attended school in Earlham. At the time of her death she was the oldest living graduate of the Earlham Schools. She attended Iowa Teachers College (later Northern Iowa University) and completed her studies leading to a lifelong career in teaching. Her earliest teaching assignments were in one-room schools in the Menlo vicinity. She often presided in the homes of students' parents.

Alice continued her teaching profession in the Rockford, Ill. elementary schools and retired from teaching in Rockford. She then moved to Grand Rapids to live with her sister Esther, and they both later were residents of Pilgrim Manor Retirement Community in that city. Esther died in 2001.

Alice was a lifetime member of the Earlham Friends (Quaker) Church, and was involved in many teacher-affiliated professional groups.

Kuhn Funeral Home of Earlham was in charge of arrangements.
