DON ELBERT JEFFRYES

Another soldier from Madison county died of pneumonia, Oct. 14, 1918, in France. Don Elbert Jeffryes, son of George and Nora Jeffryes, left Winterset May 28 for Camp Dodge, where he was assigned to Co. K, 349th Infantry. An attack of measles kept him at Camp Custer and his company went on without him. He endeavored to rejoin it, but was sent to Camps Upton, Merritt and Mills, and at Camp Merritt was assigned to Co. B, 344th Infantry, sailing about Sept. 2, 1918.

His overseas card reached here about about Sept. 13, and word of his death came on Nov. 10. Private Jeffryes came from Kansas to Adair county, 23 years ago, when but one year old. About seven years ago, the family moved to Madison county, his residence being in and near Winterset since that time. Besides his parents, two brothers and other relatives survive him.
