David S. Shull a young man formerly well known in this city, where he resided when a boy and a graduate from the high school some years ago was drowned in the Coon river at Adel last Tuesday. In company with another man he was rowing on the river, when they lost control of the boat and it threatened to go over the dam.

Both jumped into the water. Shull's companion reached the shore, but he himself was caught by the current, carried over the dam and drowned. The unfortunate man was twenty-nine years old.

OBITUARY

DEATH of David S. Shull-A well lived life means far more to the world than a lengthy eulogy; but when a young man has maintained a purity of life and Christian character amid the various temptations that beset him, we feel that a tribute to his memory ought to be placed before the world, as an incentive to others; not that he needs our words now. When the sad news came that David Shull was drowned, many were the aching hearts and tearful eyes, and our sympathies went out toward the stricken family.

We thought of David as the boy, growing to manhood almost, in our midst; in our Sabbath school, and graduating from our public school with honors, and all these years we recall no word of reproach ever being uttered against him. Then he removed with his parents to Des Moines and entered the Baptist College, graduating in ‘88. At the Alumni banquet which occurred only 2 weeks before his death, he responded to a toast in behalf of his class, in one of the ablest speeches of the occasion.

At the time of the accident he was engaged in the banking business in Adel, and when it was known on the evening of June 30th that he was drowned the citizens turned out in vast numbers to recover the body, which was found after a forty hours search, and taken to his home in Des Moines.

Memorial services were held in the Forrest Avenue Baptist church, of which he was a consistent member, then accompanied by a large number of relatives and friends, the remains were conveyed to Winterset for interment on the morning of July 4th. It was in sad contrast with a glad national day, the funeral train wending its way to our quiet little South Hill Cemetery, where a simple closing service was held, and where many old friends were gathered to extend their sympathy to the bereaved ones.

A few years ago another young man-member of the same Sabbath school class with David Shull-was brought to us for burial. From the land of flowers, over the snow crowned mountains, through icy gorges, and this silent passenger, and we laid him in the frost bound earth. Near that grave is the newly made on but the earth is green and the flowers bloom.

Influence is far-reaching so though absent, may he speak to us. His death causes a vacancy that years cannot fill, but may we not also confidently hope that his quiet, exemplary, Christian life, leaves an influence that will prove a help to other young men, a comfort to his friends, and linger as a lasting fragrance in the home that is made so lonely by his death.
