ILA MCCLURG, Winterset

Ila Maxine McClurg, 91, died Dec. 10, 2007, at West Bridge Care & Rehabilitation in Winterset.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 15, at Kuhn Funeral Home in Earlham with Pastor Jerry Hoff officiating. Burial was at Earlham cemetery.

Ila McClurg was born May 15, 1916, in Madison Township, Madison County, to Ralph and Mabel (Speer) Bricker. She attended rural schools in Madison County, graduating from Earlham High School in 1934. She attended the Earlham Academy and then taught in rural school for several years.
Her marriage to Robert Lloyd McClurg took place Aug. 17, 1940.

Ila had worked at the Paulson Cafe in rural Earlham as well as at Look Magazine in Des Moines as a clerk. She and her husband resided on their farm in rural Earlham until 1973 when they retired to DeSoto. In 1995, they moved to Winterset. Ila was a member of the Golden Friends Club in DeSoto. She also was a "Gold Star Mother" - due to hr son John being killed in the Vietnam War.

She was preceded in death by her husband; one daughter, Janice Davenport; two sons, Robert and John McClurg; and two brothers, Russell and Melvin Bricker.

She is survived by one daughter, Carol Wachter of West Des Moines; a sister, Hazel Harvey of Waukee; and four grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.

Ila McClurg, 91, died Monday, Dec. 10, 2007 at the West Bridge Care and Rehab Center in Winterset.

Services were held Saturday, Dec. 15, 2007 at Kuhn Funeral Home in Earlham with Pastor Jerry Hoff of Earlham Methodist Church officiating. Special music included “Precious Lord, Take My Hand,” “In The Garden,” and “What A Friend We Have In Jesus.”

Bearers were Brady Wachter, Kevin Hochstetler, Chuck Hochstetler, Bruce Bricker, Steve Davenport, and Raymond Bricker.

Interment was in Earlham Cemetery, Earlham.

Ila Maxine McClurg was born the daughter of Ralph and Mabel Speer Bricker on May 15, 1916 at the family farm in Madison Township, Madison County.

Ila attended rural schools in Madison County and graduated from Earlham High School in 1934. She attended the Earlham Academy and then taught in rural school for several years.

On Aug. 17, 1940, Ila and Robert Lloyd McClurg were married. This union was blessed with four children: Janice, Robert, Carol, and John. Ila was employed for some time at the Paulson Café in rural Earlham, as well as a clerk at Look Magazine in Des Moines.

Ila and Lloyd lived on their farm in rural Earlham until 1973 when they retired to DeSoto, and then to Winterset in 1995.

Ila always had a great garden and used much of her bounty to cook for family and friends. She and Lloyd traveled around most of the United States visiting family and friends and doing lots of sightseeing and taking pictures. She was a member of the Golden Friends Club in DeSoto, where retired people would gather for potluck dinners and to play cards. Ila was also a “Gold Star Mother” due to her son John being killed in the Viet Nam War.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Lloyd, a daughter, Janice Davenport, two sons, Robert McClurg and John McClurg; two brothers, Russell Bricker and Melvin Bricker; a sister-in-law, Joy Bricker, and a brother-in-law, Henry (Duke) Harvey.

Survivors include a daughter, Carol and Gary Wachter of West Des Moines, a sister, Hazel Harvey of Waukee; a sister-in-law, Irma Bricker of Stuart; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Kuhn Funeral Homes of Dexter, Earlham, and Redfield was in charge of arrangements.
