Obituary

Died, at the family residence in Lee township, on Monday, Sept. 8, at 9 o’clock a.m., of bronchitis, Kate, third daughter of M. M. and Mary Gilleran. Two short weeks ago life with her seemed all pleasure and sunshine, and none would have thought that death would so soon claim for its victim the bright and happy Katie Gilleran. She had taken cold, which at first seemed slight, but terminated in the bronchitis, and after twelve days suffering she quietly passed away surrounded by all the members of her family except one brother who is away from home. She was at the time of her death but 17 years of age, and the closing of her bright young life has left sorrow in many hearts. She was a member of the Catholic church, and during her last illness was comforted by its prayers and sacrament.

Her funeral which occurred Wednesday at the Catholic cemetery was the largest ever known in this part of the county, there being a procession of over 90 vehicles. It was a solemn sight to witness the old and the young, these who had known and loved her; coming to see the closing of that early grave, and pay the last respect to one who through life had been the friend and favorite of all. And the sad expression on the faces of those present showed that there was sorrow for the dead as well as sympathy for the bereaved.

Her pall bearers were Joe Nolan, Tom Waldron, John Wiedman, Hugh Duffy, Frank McNamara, and Geo. Aller, and as the last spade full of earth was cast upon the grave of one so young, all knelt to offer a prayer for the repose of her soul, and slowly and sadly walked away, leaving Katie to her last long sleep.
