Death of George W. Garner

George W. Garner, who had been critically ill for several weeks with typhoid fever and complications, died at his home on East Jefferson street Tuesday morning, December 14th, about 4:30 o’clock. Funeral services were conducted at Tidrick’s Funeral home at 11 o’clock Wednesday morning by Rev. David J. Shenton, and burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.

Mr. Garner was born at Wyota, Wisconsin, April 21st, 1853 and was the last of nine children. He was married to Miss Ella Decker, November 13th, 1878, and they had one daughter who died when she was a year old. Mr. Garner came to Winterset over fifty years ago when he was a young man and has been in business here since. He owned a hardware store on the north side of the square for a number of years, and has recently been doing auto repair work.

George Washington Garner, the son of Alfred and Margaret Smith Garner, was born on April 21st, 1852, at Wyota, Wisconsin, and passed away at his home in Winterset, December 14th, 1926, having reached the age of 73 years, 7 months and 13 days. Mr. Garner was one of a family of nine children. Wyota, Wisconsin, Dubuque county, Iowa, Missouri, and Madison county have been his successive homes.

He was united in marriage to Miss Ella Decker on November 13th, 1878. One daughter, Lily, who lived to be one year old, was given to this union.

Mr. Garner was a member of the Knights of Pythias lodge of Winterset, and also at the time of his death was enrolled as a member of the Methodist Episcopal church. He has been a familiar figure on the streets of Winterset for many years and as a workman was always regarded as reliable and upright in his dealings with his fellow men. He passes on to his future home greatly respected by all that knew him. His widow, Mrs. Ella Garner, and other relatives and friends are very deeply bereaved by the passing out of the earth life of one they loved so well.

Rev. D. J. Shenton conducted the funeral service in Tidrick’s funeral home at 11 o’clock Wednesday morning and the burial was in the Winterset cemetery.
