Jane Foster Reed was born in Union township April 15, 1825, and died Jan. 31, 1905 as the result of pneumonia and the infirmities of old age. She was the daughter of Henry and Lydia Foster who were among the earliest settlers of Union township.

The deceased was united in marriage to John Reed Oct. 28, 1851 and their married life of over fifty-three years has been spent in the vicinity of her birthplace. To them were born six children-Elizabeth, deceased, wife of J. M. McCullough of Unrichsville; William F. of Union township, Lydia, deceased, wife of L. D. Work; Louisa, who died in childhood; Attorney G. W. Reed of Uhrichsville and Mary Delle at home.

Mrs. Reed united with the M. E. church when but a child and was an active church worker to the time of her last illness. Her religion was no dead form, but a living, active principle, giving color to her whole life work. Through her strong entreaties and fervent prayers, many have been persuaded to lead a new life.

Mrs. Reed was a strong believer in the missionary cause; was instrumental in organizing the auxiliary of the W.F.M.S. at Pleasant Valley and was its president for thirteen years. She did much for the cause of temperance; she visited the sick and cared for the orphans. She "went about doing good." She was a woman of strong personality and left an impression for good upon all with whom she came in contact.

Words can not express the value of such a life. Her influence will go on forever in the many lives that have been made better by hers.
