Had Retired Last Year After 58 Years In Business In Winterset

Ray Allen, Sr., a well-known Winterset business man for half a century, died Saturday, March 4, at Casa Grande, Ariz. He and Mrs. Allen were in Arizona to visit at the home of their son Ray Allen, Jr. of Phoenix.

Mr. Allen was 67 years of age at this death. He was a life-time resident of Madison county, born here March 4, 1900, a son of Melvin and Cora Husted Allen. His death occurred on his sixty-seventh birthday.

He continued as a clerk at the store during the years it was operated as a partnership by Charles Aikins and Fred Hardy. In 1929, he purchased Hardy's interest and the store became Aikens and Allens' until 1951 when he became sole owner. He had sold the store and retired from active business just last August.

Mr. Allen was active in Winterset community organizations over a long period of years, serving as an officer of various Commercial club and Chambers of Commerce organizations. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias here and was serving his second year as chancellor commander. He was a member of the First Christian church of Winterset.

He also leaves the son, Ray Allen, Jr., of Phoenix; two brothers, Bernard Allen of Phoenix and Kenneth Allen of Earlham; and a sister, Mrs. Wilma Henrich of Winterset; in addition to three grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
