Obituary

STOCK—Died in Douglas township, Madison county, Iowa, February 10, 1890, Richard Edward, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. John Stock, aged 3 years, 9 months and 3 days.

Again in an interval of less three weeks death’s messenger, by membranous croup, visited this heart-broken family. Two golden links that formed the strong chain of the family union and parental love, have been broken. Two loved little boys have been taken from the home. Little Dickey, as he was so familiarly called, was an intense sufferer the last two days of his life, and from the afflicted parents the query may arise, why all this suffering? Why should our loved boy be taken so suddenly from our home and our strong embrace, where every tender care and kindness of our kind neighbors was given? Oh, his life was the light of our home. And yet what cares, troubles and temptations has your loved one escaped. And now the double pang has come. All that is mortal is laid in the tomb. The earth shall hide the little coffin and the pretty flowers that kind hands had placed within it, the sweet smile on the face and the lilly held in the hands, all must lie in the earth from whence it came. Such is the inevitable law. Yet amid all this, to those who mourn their dead dear ones there is consolation, for Jesus hath said, “Suffer little children to come unto Me, for of such is the kingdom of Heaven.”

On Thursday, the 13th, the funeral service was conducted at the home at one o’clock, p.m., after which the little body, followed by the bereft family and a large circle of friends and kind neighbors, was borne to the Worthington cemetery and there laid in the tomb—the silent home of the dead.

Our little Richard from pain set free,
Lies side by side with his brother, Lee.

Our God to call us homeward,
His darling son sent down;
And now still more to tempt us there,
Has taken up our own.
