Opal Maxine Houston, 90, died October 6, 2007 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. She was born January 28, 1917 to John and Eliza Sawhill of Truro, Iowa. Opal was currently a resident of Timberland Assisted Living at Deerfield, Urbandale, Iowa.

Opal attended Simpson College following high school graduation and received her teaching certificate. She taught at Washington Center #5 from 1935-1938. While teaching she met her future husband, Paul.

On November 20, 1937, Opal married Paul Addison Houston. They lived in Indianola, Iowa, for a time, where their son, Lee was born. Later, they moved to Ames, Iowa, where their daughter, Beverly was born. Opal was the bookkeeper for her husband's business during that time. In 1953, the family moved to Osceola, Iowa where they operated the family farming business. Opal also worked as a Sales Associate at J.C. Penneys. She was a member of the Church of Christ.

Following her husband's death on May 18, 1984. Opal remained on the family farm until 2005 when she moved to Urbandale, Iowa to reside with her daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Terry Heuton. On March 28, 2007, she moved to Timberland Assisted Living where she enjoyed the loving atmosphere and care that she received from the staff and residents.

Opal is survived by her daughter-in-law, Jean Houston of Anchorage, Alaska, her daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Terry Heuton, of Urbandale, grandchildren, Julie and Clint Johnson, Paul and Laura Houston, David and Angie Houston all of Anchorage, Alaska, John and Michelle McCuddin of Windsor Heights and Kelly McCuddin of Des Moines, Kale and Shelly Heuton of Altoona, Britta and Rob Hansen of Des Moines, and Cole Heuton of Pleasant Hill, great grandchildren, Zac and Jessica Johnson, Michael, Tyler and Katelyn Houston, Jayden and Blake Houston, Johnny, Shelby and Jacob McCuddin, Blake and Jenna Hansen, and Kelsey and Carter Heuton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul and her son, Lee.
