The sad news was brought to town last Saturday of the death the day before, Friday, October 18th, of Mr. J. B. Hammack at his home in Scott township. Deceased was eighty three years of age and had been in very poor health for some time, the immediate cause of death being a paralytic stroke. At the time of his death Father Hammack had lived in this county twelve years. He was a faithful member and at one time a minister of the Baptist church, having joined that denomination while yet a young man. His only relatives in this vicinity are a daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Holliwell, at whose home he passed away in an unconscious state, mercifully unaware of the grief of those he left behind, to whom his goodness and affection will ever be a sacred memory.
The funeral exercises were conducted last Sunday by the Rev. G. C. Peck, pastor of the Winterset Baptist church.
_________________________Coordinator note: Burial is listed in 1878-1937 Winterset Cemetery ledger as buried in "east part of old cemetery." There is no known stone.
