STROKE OF APOPLEXY:

E. G. Perkins, of Jackson Township, Suddenly Stricken Down.

On Tuesday afternoon, of this week, Mr. E. G. Perkins, of Jackson township, the postmaster at Maple Grove post office, was engaged in putting hay into the mow of his barn. He was working near the roof, and at about two o’clock he suddenly fell, falling or sliding down several feet. When taken up he was unconscious, and it was at first supposed that the shock resulting from the fall produced the unconsciousness. Help was immediately summoned and Dr. Wray, of this city was called. On examination it was found that the effects of the fall were slight, merely a few scratches, or trifling bruises, and that the fall itself was occasioned by an attack of apoplexy. He had had the most constant care and regular attendance of medical assistance, but up to the time this is written, Thursday noon, he remains unconscious. His recovery is considered highly improbable.

Mr. Perkins is about sixty-seven years of age, and, we believe, has heretofore enjoyed regular good health, at least as good as the average man of his age. He has always been a man of regular and temperate habits. We would be glad to hear of his speedy recovery, but, as he has already lain in an unconscious state for two days, it appears a result hardly to be hoped for.

DEATH OF AN OLD CITIZEN.

E. G. Perkins, of Jackson Township, Passes Away after a Short and Unconscious Sickness.

Died, at his home in Jackson township, Madison county, Iowa, of apoplexy, August 6, 1889, Erastus G. Perkins, in the 68th year of his age.

Erastus G. Perkins was born May 20th, 1822, at Barnard, Vermont, and died at his home at Maple Grove, Madison county, Iowa, August 6, 1889. He was united in marriage December 22, 1847, to Rosette A. Merrill, to whom were born six children, four of whom are living, two having preceded the father to the other world. His death was occasioned by apoplexy, and came without warning. He lingered for a few days, but in unconsciousness.

Mr. Perkins was a man of worth; he was kind, pious, liberal and true to every interest of honor, church and state, and if he differed with his brethren it was because he really believed what he professed. He had received quite a liberal education and was a man of reason, and rapid and correct comprehensive powers of mind and soul. He was loyal to every interest of the church of his choice, a liberal Christian, a good counselor, a kind husband, father and friend. He no doubt lived to be ready for death.

The funeral services conducted by the pastor were held at his late residence on the afternoon of August 7th. A large number of persons were in attendance at the funeral obsequies, after which the body was taken in charge of the members of his lodge of Patrons of Husbandry, of which he was an honored member, and borne to the cemetery at Winterset. After the beautiful and impressive burial ceremonies of that order was rendered, the body of E. G. Perkins was laid to rest to await the call of God at the resurrection morn.

Mr. Perkins was a citizen of Madison county for over thirty years. Before his removal to Iowa he was for some time a clerk in one of the departments at Washington. Since his residence here he has been most of the time engaged in farming, but was for several years county treasurer of Madison county. For many years he was kept in the office of magistrate by the suffrage of the citizens of his township, and he was also for a long time and until his death, postmaster of the Maple Grove post office.

He was universally held in high regard by neighbors and friends. Madison county loses one of its most useful and public-spirited citizens. To his immediate family, the heart-felt sympathy of their entire acquaintance, in this hour of their sad bereavement. Yet the parting is but short: the reunion will be eternal.
