Mrs. William Deardorff, formerly of Peru, but who for the past ten years has made her home with a daughter, Mrs. William Beeler, in Winterset, died January 19. She was 83 years old.

Mrs. Deardorff was born Sarah Elma Simmons, daughter of William and Harriet McKay Simmons, near Columbus, Ohio, on August 2, 1851. She came with her parents to Madison county at the age of 17, and here spent the remainder of her life.

She was married to William H. Deardorff on October 3, 1873. They made their home at Peru, and were the parents of four daughters. The husband died on August 28, 1920.

In Ohio Mrs. Deardorff had been a member of the Friends church, but after coming to Iowa she united with the Methodist church in Peru. She was also a charter member of the Women’s Relief corps at Peru.

She is survived by her four daughters, Mrs. Beeler of Winterset, Mrs. Ida Carr and Mrs. Verna Macumber of Des Moines, and Mrs. Nora Beeler of Indianola; a sister, Mrs. Rose Reed of Fresno, California, and ten grandchildren. Funeral services were held from the Ramsey-Richards funeral home in Winterset Tuesday, in charge of the Rev. W. W. Benzinger of the Methodist church. The sermon was based on the text, “John, 3:16.” Burial was made in a cemetery south of Peru.
