Our community was startled to hear that little Georgy Eyerly, the six-year-old son of George Eyerly, had died at his home about 7 o'clock Tuesday morning. The little fellow had been suffering from lung troubles for sometime past. His death occurring in the midst of our Christmas festivities cast a gloom over many homes.

Obituary

EYERLY – Died, in Douglas township, Madison county, Iowa, December 25, 1888, George, son of Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Eyerly, aged five years, eight months and nineteen days. His death was caused by a rash, which was prevalent among the children of the community, which settled upon his lungs, and formed an abscess, which broke and closed up the bronchial tubes, causing immediate death. Little George was an unusually bright boy for one of his age. Was noticed and loved by all who knew him.

On the day before his death, with his schoolmate, Birdie Johnson, and his little brother, Earl, were all out playing in the orchard, their young hearts all radiant with glee and bounding with joy, in anticipation of going to the West Star church in the evening to a Christmas tree, at which place the family were all in attendance, the church not being over a quarter of a mile from their home. During the exercises of the evening George was taken with a spell of coughing and seemed to be quite unwell. The parents thought they had better take him home, but the child being of more than ordinary will and courage, and bravely fighting against his disease, wanted to remain until the presents were given to the children, his mother telling him that his Christmas presents would be brought to him. He then consented to go home.

The father then wrapped him up comfortable, and in the strong arms of a loving father, was carried to the house. Medical aid was immediately summoned. Their family physician, in the person of Dr. Davisson, was there in a short time, who with the father and mother and other friends, did all in their power to sustain life, but to no avail. At fifteen minutes past eight o’clock, on Christmas morning, without a struggle, but as it were in a sweet sleep, the spirit of little Georgie took its flight to God, who gave it.

The sudden death of this little boy and the circumstances surrounding it, was a shock to the whole community. Truly “in the midst of life we are in death, and at such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.” And to the afflicted family we would say that while this has been the saddest Christmas day of your life, remember He for whom the day is celebrated has said: “Let not your hearts be troubled; ye believe in God, believe also in Me. In my Father’s house are many mansions. I go to prepare a place for you.” “I am the resurrection and the life.” “Suffer little children to come unto me, for of such is the kingdom of heaven.” Brothers and sisters, oh, how you will miss little Georgie. He can never return to you, but you may go to him. Sunday school and day school, class and playmates, strive to be good; boys and girls, love the Savior; and with your playmate that has gone, may you all meet again.

On the following day the funeral exercises were conducted at the home by the Rev. Preston, of the Winterset circuit. A very impressive discourse was given from the text, “The Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.” Then the body of little Georgie was borne to the Winterset cemetery, followed by the bereft friends and neighbors who had gathered to pay their last tribute of respect.

In conclusion we extend the thanks of the bereaved friends to their neighbors, who so kindly gave their aid and sympathy in this their deep sorrow.

Georgie, our loved boy, is gone. The first one from our home has been called to die; and as death shall summon us one by one, oh may our number be unbroken in the sweet bye and bye.
