MERCER DAVIS, Earlham

Mercer Vernon Davis, 85, of Earlham died Oct. 31, 2007, in Des Moines.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Nov. 4, at Kuhn Funeral Home in Earlham with Ron Karr officiating. Burial was at Earlham Cemetery. Presentation of the flag was by Earlham American Legion Post 158.

Mercer Davis was born Feb. 25, 1922, to Walter Irwin and Ethel Kay (Johnson) Davis of Terril and was a 1939 graduate of Maplewood Academy in Hutchinson, Minn. He served three years in the United States Army, stationed in Germany during World War II. His marriage to Fern Ruth Webb took place Jan. 16, 1946. Mercer spent most of his life operating his 160-acre farm in Madison County. He also did custom farm work. Following Fern’s death in February of 1994, he later married Hollis Gronning in April 1995. Mercer was a member of the Des Moines Seventh-day Adventist Church.

He was preceded in death by both wives, Fern and Hollis; and two sisters, Ellen Juhl and Genevieve Farrar.

He is survived by his children — Lyle Dean Davis of Lansing, Mich., Lynette Dee Manning of Des Moines, Lyndell Sue Davis of Mt. Ayr, Lynn Alan Davis of Lincoln, Neb., and Lynden James Davis of DeSoto; a sister, Darlene Lamb of Creston; and six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held for Mercer Vernon Davis at 2:00 pm on Sunday, November 4, 2007 at the Kuhn Funeral Home in Earlham, Iowa with Ron Karr officiating.

Pianist was Debbie Jones. Jennifer Weber was the soloist singing “When We All Get To Heaven” and “Amazing Grace”.

Pallbearers were Jeremy Davis, Derek Pyland, Robert Seymour John Lanphear, Mike McLaughlin, John Seymour.

Mercer Vernon Davis was born the son of Walter Irwin and Ethel Kay (Johnson) Davis on February 25, 1922, in Terril, Iowa and died October 31, 2007 at the age of 85.

Mercer graduated from Maplewood academy in Hutchinson, Minnesota in 1939. He served 3 years in the US Army during WWII stationed in Germany.

Mercer and Fern Ruth Webb were married January 16, 1946. Fern died February 17, 1994. Mercer spent most of his life operation his 160 acre farm in Madison County, Iowa and also did custom farm work.

Mercer and Hollis Gronning were married in April 1995. Hollis died in December 2006. Mercer was a member of the Des Moines Seventh-Day Adventist Church.

Surviving family members include his sister, Darlene Lamb of Creston, Iowa; children Lyle Dean Davis and wife Beverly of Lansing, Michigan; Lynette Dee Manning and husband Walter, Jr. of Des Moines, Iowa; Lyndell Sue Davis of Mt. Ayr, Iowa; Lynn Alan Davis and wife LuAnn of Lincoln, Nebraska; Lynden James Davis and wife Debbie of DeSoto, Iowa; 6 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

Mercer was preceded in death by his parents, his wives, and his sisters Ellen Juhl and Genevieve Farrar.

Interment was held at the Earlham Cemetery in Earlham, Iowa. The Earlham American Legion Post 158 presented the flag. Kuhn Funeral Homes was in charge of arrangements.
