J. S. Tullis, well known to the people of this county, and one of its former sheriffs, died at Earlham and was buried here last week, under the auspices of the Odd Fellows order.

J. S. Tullis, of Adair county, died at his home last Thursday of typhoid fever. Mr. Tullis was an old resident of this county, where he had lived for a number of years. He was sheriff of Madison county for two terms, proving an efficient officer as well as an honored and respected citizen. He was a member of the 39th Iowa and served through the war.

The funeral took place here Friday and was conducted by I.O.O.F., of which order he was a prominent member. The deepest sympathy of this community goes out to the bereaved family and many are the friends who mourn his loss. Sheriff McAndrew and Ex-Sheriffs Brock, Ratliff and Davis were pallbearers.

Mustered Out.

Whereas, J. S. Tullis, sergeant of Co. A., 39th Iowa Volunteer Infantry, aged sixty, was mustered out from the army of the living on Thursday last, December 8th, by the Great Commander, on returning from his funeral Pitzer Post ordered the following resolutions to be placed on record:

1. That in the death of J. S. Tullis we have lost a loyal comrade and a country a tried soldier and exemplary citizen.

2. That for the heroism displayed and wound received by him in defending the Allatoona Pass, we hereby render to his memory the praise so justly due.

3. That to the citizens of this county for twice electing him to the office of sheriff, we tender our heartfelt thanks.

4. That we extend our warmest sympathy to the immediate friends and family of the deceased.
