Page 1DEATH OF JOE MANDERS
Joe Manders, Madison county resident, died Tuesday morning, January 16th, at the home of his son, Clarence in Adair. Mr. Manders had gone to Adair Wednesday, January 10th, for a visit with his son, and while there, became ill with pneumonia. His condition grew worse, and he died about eleven o’clock, Tuesday morning.
The body was taken to Van Meter and funeral services are to be held there Thursday afternoon, January 18th at two o’clock, and burial will be in the Van Meter cemetery.
Mr. Manders is survived by two sons, Clarence of Adair, and Frank of Waukee and three daughters, Mrs. Waldron Rogan of Pitzer, and Mrs. Josephine Niendorf and Mrs. Clara Addy of Van Meter. Mrs. Manders died about three years ago.

Joseph Manders
Joseph Manders was born August 5, 1860 in Dallas county, Iowa and departed this life, after a brief illness with pneumonia January 16, 1934, aged 73 years, 5 months and 11 days.
On October 15, 1884 he was united in marriage to Hulda Neal Lanning who has preceded him in death 2-1/2 years. Six children were born to this union, five of them remain. They are Clarence R. Manders of Adair, Mrs. Carrie Addy of Van Meter, Frank Manders of Waukee, Mrs. Josephine Niendorf of Van Meter and Mrs. Eva Rogan of Pitzer. A daughter, Mabel, died in infancy. One sister and one brother survive him, Mrs. Kate Rippey of Adel and Nick Manders of Waukee.
In 1915 he became a member of the Fairview Methodist church.
His childhood and early manhood days were spent on the homestead of his parents near Waukee and with the exception of two years almost his entire life was lived in Dallas and Madison county.
He has known the hardships of the pioneer, has known the warmth and coziness of a log cabin, the quiet and loneliness of a sod house on the prairies of Kansas, the interesting cross country trips in a covered wagon and his children will always cherish the tales of his many adventures.
Funeral services were held January 19th at the M. E. church at Van Meter. Rev. S. C. Peterson conducting and burial in Thornton cemetery.
