Mrs. Hannah M. Kendig

Hannah M. Crain, a daughter of Daniel and Eliza Crain, was born in Crawfordsville, Indiana, July 21, 1837. For a time her home was on a farm in Cedar county, Iowa, and afterwards she moved with her parents in a caravan over the pioneer trail to Kansas. At Centerville, Kansas, she was married in 1859 to Robert A. Stitt, who was afterwards captain in Company F, 4th Iowa Infantry in the Civil war.

Because of the drought in Kansas they moved to Madison county, Ia. in the fall of 1860. They came as pioneers and the young bride drove an ox team from Kansas to Iowa. While on this journey the young husband on horseback saw the ox team running away. The distance was such that he could not be sure what team it was but could see the oxen leaping and plunging and running on the prairie. Spurring his horse he overtook them and found his bride bravely holding on, and soon the runaway oxen was brought to a stop in the rescue was effected. They located on the old Travis farm in a log house which is still standing near Peru.

Three children were born in their home, Mrs. Hilda Ensign, of Des Moines, Iowa; Ella who died when five years of age; and Mrs. Clara Froelich, of Des Moines, Iowa.

She was married to Andrew J. Kendig, a leading merchant, of this city, April 11, 1872, bringing into the family circle the two daughters of Capt. Stitt, Hilda and Clara; and then only son of Mr. Kendig by his former wife, Phil Sheridan Verner Kendig, who died in 1891.

To this union of Mr. and Mrs. Kendig came one daughter, Jenny Maude, now Mrs. Nielsen, who together with her husband, son and daughter has so faithfully cared for this aged mother during years of invalidism. There are three grandchildren, Robert Ensign, of San Francisco, Cal., Eugene Verner Nielsen and Hilda Estella Nielsen, of Winterset, Iowa and one great-grandchild, Maurine Ensign, of San Francisco, California.

She has lived for fifty years in the same house here in Winterset. No one came to the door of her home who did not receive a hearty welcome

While her health permitted she was an attendant of the Presbyterian church of which she was a member. She was a charter member of the Eastern Star in this city. She is the last of a family of eight children.

She was called away Sabbath evening at 11:19 o’clock February 5, 1922, aged eighty-four years, six months and fifteen days. The end came peacefully after a long life.

The funeral service was held at her home Tuesday at half past two o’clock led by Rev. Leroy C. Cooley, pastor of the Presbyterian church.
