Thursday, November 16, 1899J. S. White, who has long been failing in health, died last Tuesday morning. Mr. White was one of the oldest residents of Winterset, having come here in the 50's. His exact age we are unable to state.
He was born in England, and came to this country with his parents in infancy. He leaves a wife, 2 sons, Oliver and Wilbur, and 1 daughter, Mrs. Nina Russell.
The funeral was held on Wednesday afternoon from the Methodist church.

At 2:15 a. m. Tuesday, Nov. 14th, 1899, all that was mortal of John S. White passed away.
The deceased was born in London, England, June 6, 1820. At the age of four years he came to America with his parents and Settled in Rochester, N.Y. He resided in that city for a number of years. Came to Iowa in 1855 and settled in Winterset in 1856.
October 7, 1867 he was united in marriage to miss Sidney Baker, and as a result of this union four children were born, Oliver M. White, Nina E. Russell, Wilbur White and Winnie White, who died, May 30, 1882.
The funeral services were conducted from the M. E. church at 2 o’clock yesterday afternoon, by the I. O. O. F. of which order the deceased was a member.
Mr. White was a familiar figure in Winterset, he having held several offices of trust of minor importance.

Pioneer Citizen and Former City Marshal Dies at His Home in Winterset
John S. White, city marshal of Winterset for many years and justice of the peace for many more, an old and respected citizen of Winterset, died at his home in this city Monday night after a lingering illness. The funeral occurred Wednesday afternoon.
Mr. White came to Winterset before the war in 1856 and for many years was the leading shoe dealer of the city. He afterward removed to Indianola where he resided three years. He was a justice of the peace in Winterset many years and marshal of the city two terms.
He has been in ill health for several years and his death for the past few weeks has been daily feared. His wife and a daughter survive him.
