Thursday, November 29, 1934PIONEER RESIDENT CALLED BY DEATH
Daniel R. Jones Died Friday November 23, 1934, Aged 83. Funeral Last Monday.
Uncle Dan, as he has been affectionately known, has passed on. A steady decline in health during the past few years and a lingering illness of eight weeks duration brought his death last Friday, November 23. Mr. Jones has been an Earlham resident for many years and his familiar figure will be missed.
The funeral was held at the Friends church in Earlham Monday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock. Reverend Willis Craven officiated. Interment was made in Bear Creek cemetery. Pall bearers were: Elmer Bechtel, Clem Godby, Alva Carey, Will Price, Floyd McKibben and Clarence Wilson. Honorary pall bearers: John Reynolds, Thomas Cox, Ben Fry, Jonathan Andrew, Darius Cook and Dave Gabbert. The music was a chorus with a special number by Mr. and Mrs. Fred Fry.
Relatives attending the funeral were his sisters, Elizabeth Salyer of Spring Hill, Iowa, and Julia Jones of Earlham, Mr. and Mrs. Lester Salyer of Des Moines, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Morrison and Mr. and Mrs. Price, cousins, from Stuart. Mr. and Mrs. Arlie Fritz of Adel and Mr. and Mrs. Will Hibbs of Redfield were also present.
Daniel R. Jones, oldest son of John E. and Jane Ramsey Jones was born June 10th, 1851 near West Newton, Indiana, and in 1868 the family moved to Iowa, making their home at different places—Redfield, Earlham and Stuart. While living near Redfield the young people of the family were employed in the woolen factory located near that place.
He was reared in a Christian home, his father being a minister in the M.E. Church. But after he had established a home of his own he united with the Friends Church and was still a member at the time of his death. He loved the church and Sunday school and spent much time in the study of the Bible. And for some time he was the teacher of what is known as the “Old Peoples” class until the failing of his hearing made it necessary for him to give up the work.
In 1871 he was united in marriage to Sarah E. Mendenhall and they first established their home in the Bear Creek neighborhood. Two little children came to the home—Charles E. and Laura J. both of whom were taken to the Heavenly home at the age of five months.
Some years later a niece—Mary E. Mendenhall, now Mrs. J. E. Ramsey of Pasadena, Calif., came to make her home with them, and was cared for and loved as their own.
He loved children and it was a familiar sight when he was well to see him driving about the country with a number of children in the car.
As his body became enfeebled with age he employed his hands in carving and making many little articles from different kinds of wood, which he presented to his relatives and friends.
The wife departed this life January 31, 1914. He was one of a family of six children and is survived by two sisters—Julia with whom he has made his home for some years, Mrs. Elizabeth Salyers, of Spring Hill, Iowa, and one brother, Joseph Jones of Cedar Rapids, Nebr.
The home was in Earlham, Des Moines, Stuart and then again in Earlham which has been the home for more than thirty-five years.
After a steady decline the last few years and a lingering illness of over eight weeks the spirit slipped away to be with the Redeemer on the evening of Friday, November 23, 1934, aged 83 years, five months and 13 days.
