Josiah Stanley, son of Ira and Elizabeth Stanley, was born Aug. 11, 1838, in Wayne county, Indiana, and departed this life July 20, 1908, at his residence in Earlham, Iowa.
Deceased has long been a resident of this neighborhood, having come to this county in 1860, when the present site of this thriving business town was an unbroken prairie bearing in its fertile soil rich promise for the future. Here in the year 1862 he was married to Sarah H. Wilson, daughter of Seth and Elizabeth Wilson, who with their family are remembered by all the old settlers of this section. To this union were born ten children, eight of whom, with their mother, are left to mourn the loss of a loving husband and kind father. Also remain one brother and sister.
Josiah Stanley was a birthright member of the Friends church and lived always a consistent member of the same until the separation in 1877. He was of a quiet and retiring disposition, known intimately by few outside his immediate family, happy and contented in his own home and desiring nothing more of a holiday than that it bring to the home fireside all the children and grandchildren to enjoy the day together. His deepest interest was in the things that should be the first and are the best interest of every true man; the support, welfare and happiness of his family. Quietly and happily he served his generation, and as night drew near at the close of a beautiful summer day his spirit took its flight to its eternal rest.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon in Friends church conducted by Rev. C. S. White, following which the Masonic lodge, of which deceased was a member, took charge of the remains and bore their departed brother to the Earlham cemetery where he was laid to rest with Masonic honors.
