Death of an Old Wintersettler

John M. Childers, formerly a resident of Winterset, died at his home in Denver, Colorado, February 23rd at the age of sixty-three years. Mr. Childers will be remembered by many of our oldest citizens. Mr. Childers was an old soldier. He enlisted with Co. G Second Missouri Cavalry; in the later part of 1863; he was discharged on account of disability but shortly afterwards reenlisted as captain of Co G Forty-second Missouri infantry. Although wounded several times in the service, the bushwackers succeeded in running him out of the country, when he came to Winterset where he lived for 20 years. Death was due to suffering from old wounds received in the war. Captain Childers leaves a widow and six children.
