The home of Wm. Peacock was the scene of a terrible tragedy last Friday evening. Wm. Thornburg, Jr., of Winterset, shot and killed the tallest man in Union township, if not in Madison county, Fred Peacock, who was 6 feet and 6 inches tall, and seriously wounded his father, Wm. Peacock.
Mr. and Mrs. Thornburg had separated on Feb. 20th and on Feb. 27th, Mrs. Thornburg went out to Mr. Peacock’s on a visit. Mr. Thornburg came out to try and induce his wife to return home with him, when he and Mr. Peacock got into a quarrel and fight. Thornburg succeeded in getting away and went on down to Patterson.
On his return Fred Peacock took up the quarrel for his father, stopping Thornburg and commencing to pummel him and trying to drag him out of his buggy when Thornburg drew his gun and shot Fred twice. The first shot striking in the side and not doing much damage. The second striking in the neck and breaking it. He lived only a few minutes. Thornburg then turned his gun on Mr. Peacock shooting him in the neck, making a serious wound. Thornburg drove to Patterson and gave himself up and was taken to Winterset. Mr. Peacock is some stronger and resting fairly well at the present time, Tuesday.
