Thursday, September 19, 1935LEWIS AIKIN Jefferson Township Farmer Dies
Lewis Aikin, prominent farmer of Jefferson township, died at the Methodist hospital in Des Moines, Sunday evening, September 15th, 1935, about seven o'clock. Mr. Aikin who was 77 years of age, became ill, about two weeks ago, with a carbuncle on his neck. He was taken to the Des Moines hospital last Wednesday and an operation performed on Thursday but infection had developed causing his death.
Mr. Aikin who was the son of Lewis and Mary Aikin was born in this county, and spent all of his life here. Fifty two years ago, he was married to Miss Lena Blohm of this county, and for many years they lived sousthwest of Winterset. Twenty-even years ago, they moved to Jefferson township, where they have since resided.
The deceased leaves his wife and their seven children: four daughters and three sons, Mrs. Ona Lonnecker of Winterset, Mrs. Jessie Brayman of Lorimor, Mrs. Fay Burger of Waukee, and Mrs. Opal Burger of Van Meter, Ray Aikin of Winterset and Gilbert and Emory of Van Meter. He also leaves two sisters, Miss Sarah Aikin of Winterset, and Mrs. Emma Brady of Macksburg, and 29 grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.
Two daughters have preceded the father in death: Mrs. Grace Newton and Mrs. Mae Ballentine.
The Rev. E. A. Elliott of Des Moines conducted the funeral services which were held Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock at the United Brethren church in Jefferson township and burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.

Page 3Lewis Akin (Aikin), son of Lewis and Mary Akin (Aikin) was born, January 9, 1858 in Davis county, and died September 9, 1935 at the Methodist hospital in Des Moines after a brief illness, at the age of 77 years, 8 months and six days.
His childhood was spent in Davis county, coming to Madison county with his parents at an early age. The rest of his life with the exception of one year in South Dakota, was spent in Madison county.
On December 15, 1883, he was united in marriage to Carolena Blohm and to this union were born nine children, two of whom preceded him in death, Mary Grace Newton in 1931 and Anna May Ballentine in 1932.
In 1893 he united with the Congregational church near Macksburg and later helped build the Congregational church in Monroe township where he became an active member.
In 1911 he, with his family, moved to Jefferson township, then bringing his membership to the U. B. church at North River.
He leaves to mourn his loss besides his wife, seven children, Mrs. Ona Lonnecker of Winterset; Mrs. Jessie Braman of Lorimor; Gilbert at home; Mrs. Fay Berger of Waukee; Ray of Winterset; Mrs. Opal Berger and Emery of Van Meter; two sisters, Mrs. Emma Brady of Macksburg and Miss Sarah Akin of Winterset; 29 grandchildren, four great grandchildren, many other relatives and a host of friends.
Although not as active in religious and community affairs as when younger, he kept up with the current topics of the day by reading.
He was a member of the Grand River lodge No. 406, I. O. O. F. Macksburg.
Services were held at the North River U. B. church at 2 p. m. Wednesday, conducted by Rev. E. A. Elliot of Des Moines, assisted by the Rev. L. B. Foster, pastor of the U. B. church. Services at the grave were conducted by the I. O. O. F. lodge and burial was in the Winterset cemetery.
