Death of JAMES HAYS

News of the sudden death of James Hays on Thursday, Feb. 19th, 1920, at the home of his son, Erl Hays of Bolivar, Mo., brought sorrow to many Madison county people.

Mr. and Mrs. Hays were visiting their sons, Erl and Roy, both living in Bolivar, when the stroke of apoplexy came, that caused Mr. Hays' death.

His health had not been good for several years, but no illness warning the family of the approaching end. Mr. Hays who was past 71 years of age, had farmed successfully in Douglas township for 40 years, living in Winterset from 1892 to 1894, then moved here permanently five years ago. He came from Macon county, Illinois in the year 1872 to Madison county and became closely identified with all that was good in his community.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the home of the only daughter of the family, Mrs. C. R. Peters, with Rev. George D. Rogers conducting.
