Richard Beall died on Thursday last, Jan. 17, aged 84 years.
Being an old settler a short sketch of his life may not be amiss.
He was born in Kentucky, Feb. 3, 1800; lived there until he was 23 years old and then moved to Illinois, where he married Jemima Elledge, March 7, 1827. He came to this place in April, 1855 and settled on the prairies south of town some four miles and has resided here since. While on his farm he kept open doors and turned none away. Had he lived till March 7, next he would have been married 60 years.
He became a member of the church at Griggsville, Ill., Jan. 1852. He was chairman of the first meeting called to organize the Popular church in Winterset, which took place in Jan. 1857.
He was one of the first officers of the church and is now the last male constituent member of the church.
The following resolutions were adopted by the church last Sabbath.
In view of the late death of Richard Beall, the oldest male member of the church, it seems befitting that serious action be taken. Therefore,
Resolved: First, that in his death we mourn the loss of one who stood as a pillar of the church until advancing years rendered him unable to bear the burden and heat of the day.2nd, That his modest bearing, unwavering trust in Christ and calm resignation in death should lead us to renewed devotions to the Master.
3rd. That we tender sister Beall and the family our warmest sympathy and pray that they may be comforted by the assurance that the bereavement is of God. He doeth all things well.
Note: Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
____________________Coordinator's note: There is an inconsistency in the text between the year of marriage "1827" and the length of marriage "60 years" which implies 1824 as the year of marriage. Judging by the ages of the children, 1824 is probably correct.
