Our Chip Basket

The body of Lewis Fulton, who died some time ago in California, was forwarded to this place for burial. The body arrived on Friday morning and was taken to the Baptist Church and in the afternoon was buried beside that of Miss Fulton, who was buried in our cemetery in the summer of 1878. Rev. Mr. Fulton was very generally known throughout Madison county and universally esteemed. With the death of Lewis, Mr. Fulton loses the last one of his interesting family and he will have the sympathy of his large circle of friends in Iowa and elsewhere.

Note: Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.

IN MEMORIAM

Today we laid in our quiet cemetery, the remains of a beloved son of our former pastor, Rev. J. Fulton, now of San Bernardo, California. We knew and loved this young man, and had hoped that, by a change of climate the dread destroyer might be stayed a little season ere he knocked at this door also.

But now death has claimed his own, and to-day we met at the depot the silent passenger that had come hundreds of miles, from a sunnier climet, across dreary plains, and through snow covered mountains, to find a last resting place among the people he loved.

California's fragrant flowers, and Iowa's sweet carnations were mingled on the casket that held the precious dust. As we looked upon it, far away from earthly home, it seemed a mute but powerful appeal to us to care for it tenderly. We buried him near by the sister he loved, and as we turned away from the new made grave, we drop our tears with our flowers upon it, questioning not the doings of an all wise and merciful Father.

It seems only a short time ago since the one we now mourn to-day was with us, feeble in body, yet happy with his old associates. But the warm heart that best in its frail tenement of clay is now still, and Louis Fulton sleeps the long sleep of death.
