Phillip F. Powers, a well-known Winterset resident for many years, died at his home here on Tuesday, June 30. He was 63 years of age.
Mr. Powers was a native of Illinois, where he was born at Carthage Jan. 15, 1907, a son of James E. and Lila Russell Powers. As a young man he served as a police officer in Winterset, but for many years he had been employed in the state department of public safety, serving as an inspector and as an assistant director of the department. He was also a construction supervisor with the State Conservation commission.
He served in the U. S. navy as a warrant officer during World War II.
On March 19, 1925, he was married to Della May Bartlett of Winterset, who survives him.
In addition to his wife, he leaves three sisters, Mrs. Blanche Spears of Harrisburg, Pa., Mrs. Marie Shearer of Des Moines and Mrs. Helen Olson of Ames.
He was a member of the First United Methodist church, the Masonic and Eastern Star Lodges of Winterset, and the American Legion.
Funeral services were held Thursday from the Collins Funeral home, conducted by the Rev. John C. Porath of Indianola. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
