Bert Benge, a native of Winterset who became a pioneer citizen and community leader in Grand Junction, Colo., died Monday, July 14 at Grand Junction. He was 97 years of age.
Mr. Benge was an uncle of Clifton Smith and Mrs. Gertrude Simon of Winterset, and a cousin of Mrs. Lillian Haney of Winterset.
Mr. Benge was born at Winterset May 13, 1873, and attended the schools here. As a young man he engaged in the retail shoe business here with Warren Smith. He was married here to Elsie L. Smith. They moved to Grand Junction in 1910, where he engaged in the shoe business during his active life.
He was a member of the Congregational church, and had joined the Masonic order at Winterset in 1903. In 1968 he received a 65-year membership pin in that order.
Mr. Benge was active in the Chamber of Commerce, the Lions club, Shrine and Masonic order in Colorado, and in 1969 was presented the Outstanding Citizen award by the Grand Junction Chamber of Commerce.
He is survived by three children, Harry Benge and Margaret Benge of Grand Junction, and Mrs. James Jones of Cleveland, O.
