Mrs. W. S. Doud

Mary F. Henshie was born in Grove City, Christian county, Illinois, February 7, 1859. When 14 years old she came with her parents to Mitchellville, Iowa where she was married to W. S. Doud December 12, 1878. They lived there until 1880 when they removed to Guthrie Center, Iowa. Having disposed of his business and home in 1887 they spent one year in California and then came to Winterset which has been their home ever since.

On the son Howard H., Was born in Guthrie Center in 1886 and another Hubert E., Was born in Winterset in 1894.

While residing in Guthrie Center Mrs. Doud became afflicted with organic heart trouble from which she never fully recovered, although she was able to look after the affairs of the home and family most of the time until a few weeks ago. The malady which had afflicted her for years suddenly prostrated her during the first days of intense heat and oppressive atmosphere. All that could be done by medical attention and careful nursing were unavailing. After days of suffering endured with patients and resignation she departed from this life last Saturday morning, July 15.

When a girl of 10 years she was converted and united with the Methodist church of which she continued to be an earnest, faithful and considerate member till death. Mrs. Doud was not a society woman in the modern sense of the term. Her home in her church claimed all her attention and exhausted all her energies. Neither were neglected or slighted for the excitements and trivialities of society, and both will, in her passing away, feel an irreparable loss.

During her last sickness she was soothed by the presence of an only sister, Mrs. Edith H. Smith, of Kinney, Nebraska, who, with the husband, 2 sons, and one grandchild are all the immediate relatives left to mourn her departure.
