Death of Alden B. Smith, Esq.

On Monday afternoon the unwelcome and unexpected tidings of the death of Mr. Smith was circulated upon our streets. Some month or two ago he experienced a paralytic stroke, but had rallied and was allowed to be about the house and upon the street a little. Friends had strong hopes he would be restored to almost if not quite his former health. But Monday morning a second stroke came and he was unconscious until his death which occurred during the afternoon.

Mr. Smith was an early settler of our place, and of our most active and public spirited business men. He had accumulated considerable property and used it as an enterprising citizen would. He had an open hand for the needy and always a word of sympathy for the unfortunate. He had a large circle of warm friends, and we but voice the common expression of all when we extend condolence to the bereaved widow and children.

Mr. Smith was buried Wednesday with the imposing ceremonial of the Masonic fraternity.
