Two Youth Die in Truck Accident South of Mt. Ayr

MOUNT AYR—Two youths Edsel D. Claiser, Jr., 15, of rural Afton, and Ben Eyerly, 20, of Macksburg, were killed Monday afternoon when a grain truck in which they were riding overturned in a ditch on a Ringgold county road, three miles south of Mount Ayr.

Claiser and Eyerly were passengers in a truck driven by Tim Jones, 18, of Afton, who was thrown from the truck and escaped with cuts and bruises. Jones is a patient at the Ringgold county hospital here where his condition today is reported as good.

Sheriff Elbert Strange said the accident occurred about 1 p.m. Monday on the blacktop “sale barn road” south of Mount Ayr. The front wheel of the truck went off the blacktop paving and Jones lost control of the truck which went into the ditch on the west side of the road and overturned.

Claiser and Eyerly were killed instantly, officers said.

The three youths were on the way to the Dwight Cunning farm, about seven miles farther south of Mount Ayer, where they were to help shell corn.

Edsel Dean Claiser, Jr., was the son of Edsel D. and Irene Miller Claiser. He was born at La Mesa, Calif., Jan. 30, 1945, and had lived in the Afton and Arispe community for several years. The family had live on a farm about 3 miles southwest of Afton for the past two months and had previously lived in Afton for two years and at Arispe.

The youth attended the East Union community high school and would have been a sophomore this fall.

He is survived by his parents; three brothers, Nicholas Eugene in military service in Vietnam, Marion Dean and James C. at home; two sisters, Catherine Cay and Robin Linn at home; grandfather, Pharrie Claiser of Creston; and grandmother, Mrs. Maxine Cook in California.

His body is at the Stroud funeral home at Afton. Funeral arrangements have not been made at this time pending word whether the brother in Vietnam can return for the services.

His family said a memorial fund is being established to provide a college scholarship for a member of the East Union high school graduating class of 1972 of which he would have been a member.

Ben Carl Eyerly was born at Des Moines, July 2, 1949, and had lived in the Macksburg community all of his life. He was the son of Walter and Eloise Ada Schulz Eyerly.

He was a graduate of the Orient-Macksburg high school and graduated this year from Southwestern Community college at Creston. He had enrolled at Northwest Missouri State college at Maryville, Mo., for the fall term.

He is survived by his parents’ three brothers, Wayne Wray, Alan Lynn and James William, all at home; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. O. C. Eyerly of Lorimor and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Schulz of Macksburg; three aunts and an uncle.
