Prominent Farmer-Stockman Stricken by Heart Ailment

Gillett Harpole, prominent Madison county farmer and stockman, died at a Des Moines hospital Tuesday night, Oct. 25, of a heart ailment. He had been ill since Oct. 15.

Mr. Harpole was 76 years of age. He was born in McClain county, Illinois, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Harpole, and spent his early life there. He came with the family to Madison county in 1891. Here he helped his father establish the Harpole ranch in Webster township, where they were among the early farmers to specialize successfully in livestock feeding.

As a young man he was married to Lavisa Sells. They were the parents of four sons and a daughter. Mrs. Harpole died in 1909. They had moved to near Dexter in 1908, and after his wife's death, he moved back to Illinois for three years. Returning to Iowa he lived at Colfax for a time, then back to Dexter in 1916 and in 1917 to the farm north of Patterson in Crawford township where he spent the remainder of his life.

His second marriage occurring in 1912 was to Eldora Crow, who survives him.

Mr. Harpole was an active member of the Patterson Methodist church and had been affiliated with the Woodman lodge at Dexter.

In addition to his wife, he leaves six children; Eugene Harpole of Arcadia, Calif.; James Harpole of Prole, Mrs. Glen Hatfield of St. Charles; Claude Harpole of Spirit Lake; Charles Harpole of Winterset; and Francis Harpole of Colfax, Ill. He also leaves 20 grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and two sisters, Mrs. A. D. Benson of Dexter and Mrs. Sam Stauffer of Cottonwood Falls, Kan.
