January 1927Stephen G. Compton passed away Sunday, January 16th, 1927 at 12:30 o’clock p.m., at the ripe age of seventy-two years. He came to Guthrie Center from Earlham and with his sons conducted a cattle, feed and coal business. For some time he had been in failing health and his going did not come as an entire surprise.
Mr. Compton has always been held in highest esteem by all who have known him. His cheerful disposition, his intelligent conversation and uprightness of his character, coupled with his unswerving integrity in all dealing, whether large or small, won for him the absolute confidence of all who knew him.
Fifty-one years ago last December he was united in marriage to Laura Ballard, who after fifteen years of wedded life entered into rest leaving her husband and their four children: Mrs. Wm. Overholzer, of Artesian, S. D.; Fred and Ace of Guthrie Center; and Mrs. Harry Linn of Coon Rapids, Iowa. There are also fourteen grandchildren and four brothers survive. They are W. L., of Chicago, P. B., of Stuart, A. E., of Earlham, and H. E., of Des Moines. One sister and two brothers are deceased. Mr. Compton’s forbears were of the sturdy Quaker stock and from them he inherited those principles of life which won for him the confidence and respect of his associates. His steady devotion to business was one of his marked characteristics. This community is the poorer for his going and there are many who will feel that a good and generous friend has from our midst.
Funeral services were conducted at the Presbyterian Church of Guthrie Center by the Rev. R. Bruce West and the Rev. H. Clare Welker and interment was made in the Earlham Cemetery.
