OBITUARY
Lelia Evelyn Johnson was born December 4, 1870, at Toledo, Chase county, Kansas, and departed this life on the evening of January 17, 1942, at her home in Earlham, at the age of 71 years, one month and 13 days.
At the age of four years she came with her parents to Earlham, Iowa, where she has resided ever since. She attended school at Garden Grove (near Earlham), and later in Earlham at the stone schoolhouse and Earlham Academy.
She was married in 1896 to John E. Conrad and a home was established which was maintained entirely in or near the vicinity of Earlham. Into this home came three children, all of whom survive. Lelia Conrad was a birthright member of the Friends church, and from early childhood was faithful in attendance and interest whenever it was at all possible. The training and influence of her Christian parents was evidenced through out her life. She held various places of service and responsibility in the local church, and at the time of her death, she was Superintendent of the Home Department of the Sunday School and a member of the Ministry and Oversight body. She was also very much interested in the Women’s Sunday School class. She was Reading Clerk of the Monthly Meeting over a period of five years, a task which she performed faithfully and well.
One of her outstanding characteristics was her loving devotion to her family, and her thought was constantly of others. During the four years that her invalid husband was confined to the hojme, she was his constant companion, giving untiringly of her love and care. Later, she cared for her aged mother, watching over her tenderly during her last lingering illness. Following her mother’s death in 1936, she gave up her home and took rooms in the Hattie Hodson home, where she lived until her death. She enjoyed being near the church, and attended all its services faithfully, until ill health forced her to remain at home.
Her church and her family were her centers of interest and devotion. She was interested in her children and the various activities of their families and she especially enjoyed her grandchildren.
During the pain and suffering that attended her passing she was patient and uncomplaining, doing her best to be the least possible trouble to the friends and loved ones who were caring for her.
She leaves to mourn her passing, the two sons, Leo and Roland of Earlham, and one daughter, Evelyn Cook of Adel, three grandchildren, Marjorie, Eugene and Marilyn Conrad, one nephew, Earl, of Montana, other relatives and many friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, father and mother, and an only sister.
Lelia Conrad will be missed in many ways, but all who mourn her home-going can rejoice in the promise. “Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord.” She knew that the end was near and she was ready to go.
