Earlham, Iowa
July 1897

Arena, daughter of Joseph and Mary Mendenhall was born in Lewis county, Mo., October 5th, 1871. In the spring of 1884 she moved with her parents to the vicinity of Earlham, Iowa, where she has since lived until her death July 4th, 1897, aged 25 years, 8 months, 29 days. She leaves her parents, 5 brothers and 3 sisters with many relatives and friends to mourn the loss of a kind daughter, a loving sister and true friend. Although her suffering was intense, having that dread disease consumption, yet she bore it with Christian patience and was cheerful through it all, and throughout her long sickness she constantly expressed herself as being ready to depart and be with Christ.

“Tis hard to break the tender cord,
When love has beated the heart.
Tis hard, so hard, to speak the words
Must we forever part?

Dearest loved one we have laid them In the peaceful graves embrace,
But thy memory will be cherished.
Till we see thy heavenly face.

She was laid to rest in the Earlham cemetery July 5th, 1897.
