IN MEMORIAM

Died--March 23d, 1878, at the residence of her father, in Douglas township, Madison county, Iowa, Harriet, daughter of J. C. and A. E. Wilson.

She was born in Des Moines county, Iowa, January 5, 1847. From her birth she was afflicted with spinal disease, which made it difficult for her to walk, and eventually entirely crippled her, so that she was unable to stand or walk. Through all those years she was a great sufferer, but always bore her sufferings cheerfully. Some nine years ago she professed religion, and became a member of the Presbyterian church, since which time she has lived a consistent Christian life. During her long and severe sufferings she did not complain of her hard lot, but bore them with cheerful and humble resignation. She was fond of reading, but discarded light and trashy literature, choosing that which is substantial and instructive. The Holy Bible was her choice book. She had read it entirely through eleven times, and commenced the twelfth, when she died. Her last illness began six weeks ago, since which she had been a constant and intense sufferer. She never complained of her own lot, and seemed anxious only on account of the labor and pain she gave her friends.

Her funeral took place on the 24th, and was attended by a very large concourse of friends and neighbors, showing the sympathy and respect of the community for the deceased. A discourse was delivered by Rev. J. E. Darby, and some very appropriate remarks made at the grave by Rev. Feeley. In her death her family have lost a most affectionate daughter and sister, and the church of her choice a devoted and consistent member.

Her sentiments may be appropriately expressed by the following stanzas:

"Not in mine innocence do I trust.
I bow before thee in the dust
And Through my Saviour's blood alone
I look for mercy at thy throne.

I Leave the world without a tear
Save for the friends I hold so dear.
To heal these sorrows Lord I descend
And to the friendless, prove a friend."
