MRS. CHARLES BARR PASSES AT DEXTER

Long-Time Resident of This County Succumbs at Age of 82 Years

Mrs. Charles D. Barr, a resident of Madison county since childhood died at Dexter on Monday of last week at the age of 82 years.

Mrs. Barr was the former Elizabeth Moore, daughter of Joseph and Hannah Moore and was born in Mercer county, Ill., on June 8, 1861. When she was 5 years old she came with her parents to Boone county, Iowa. A few years later they came to Madison county, where she spent almost her entire life on the farm.

On Feb. 27, 1873, she was married to Charles D. Barr. They were the parents of six children. One son, Lee Barr died in 1910.

Mrs. Barr had joined the United Presbyterian church at an early age, and following the disolution of that congregation she transferred to the First Presbyterian church at Dexter.

She is survived by her husband; five children, Melvin Barr of Dexter, Earl Barr of Lemmon, S. Dak., Ray Barr of Amarillo, Tex., Mrs. Inez Shaw and Mrs. Dortha Compton of Stuart. She also leaves two brothers, Murray Moore of Earlham and William Moore of Dexter; a sister, Mrs. Clara Woods of Kansas City, Mo.; and 17 grandchildren. Six of her grandsons are now in the nation's armed services.

Funeral services were held last Wednesday from the First Presbyterian church in Dexter, conducted by the Rev. S. C.Wadding. Burial was made in the Dexter cemetery.

Elizabeth Moore, daughter of Joseph W. and Hannah Moore, was born in Mercer County, Illinois, June 8, 1861, and passed away at Dexter, Iowa, Sept. 13, 1943, age 82 years, 3 months and 5 days. At the age of five she came with her parents to Boone County, Iowa. A few years later moving to Madison county where she grew to womanhood and spent almost her entire life on the farm.

On Feb. 27, 1873, she was married to Chas. D. Barr, who survives her.

To this union were born six children, J. Lee, who passed away in 1910, D. Melvin, of Dexter, Earl M. of Lemmon, South Dakota, Ray R., of Amarillo, Texas, Inez Shaw and Dortha Compton, of Stuart.

She has been a Christian practically all her life, becoming a member of the United Presbyterian church at an early age, and remained a member until that church dissolved and became a member of the First Presbyterian church of Dexter.

She is survived by two brothers, Murray Moore, of Earlham, and Wm. Moore, of Dexter, and one sister, Mrs. Clara Woods, of Kansas City, Mo. There also survive her, 17 grandchildren, of whom six grandsons are in the service. Hoyt Barr, who was wounded while serving in North Africa, now receiving treatment at Longview, Texas, Earl Barr, Jr., in Sicily, Merritt Shaw in Hawaii, the others still stationed in the States. Also six great grandchildren. She was a loving mother and took a great interest in her two grandsons, Lee and Ivan Barr, who grew up in the grandparents’ home.

Funeral services were held at the First Presbyterian church in Dexter Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1943, conducted by Rev. S. C. Wadding, with interment at the Dexter cemetery. The casket bearers were: Dwight Barr, Max Barr, Lee Barr, Edward Shaw, Robert Hibbs and Max Stewart. The singers were: George Piper, Kenneth Neal, Lillian Pohle, Flora Kramer and Mrs. S. C. Wadding. Lena Siese was organist. The flower ladies were Josephine Hammond, Lela Pohle, Ruby Brady and Georgia Blohm.

Those attending from a distance were: Mr. and Mrs. Ray Barr of Amarillo, Texas, Lee Barr of Chicago, Illinois, Mrs. Ivan Barr, Santa Monica, California, Mr. and Mrs. John Sawhill of Des Moines, Mr. and Mrs. Rex Stewart, Mr. and Mrs. Max Stewart, of Van Meter, Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Sawhill, Mr. John Allen, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Barr, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Cox, Mrs. Anna Barr, Mrs. Bessie Hopper, all of Winterset, Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Barr, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Criss, of Lorimor.
