Death of Vera McCants

Vera McCants, 19-year-old daughter of Mrs. Myrtle McCants, died her home on West Jefferson last Friday, April 10th, shortly after noon. Miss McCants had been in poor health for a number of years with heart trouble. She had had a short illness recently, but was believed to be recovering. She had gone to the basement on an errand and was found there, dead.

Miss Vera, who was the daughter of John and Myrtle McCants was born in this county September 29, 1911. As a little girl she lived on a farm near Creston, where her father died in 1921. Seven years ago she moved to Winterset with her mother and sisters. She attended the local schools as long as her health would permit.

She leaves her mother, two sisters, Miss Hazel and Mrs. Cloyd Lamb and her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Handley, all of Winterset.

The Rev. A. P. Keast, pastor of her church, conducted the funeral services at the Methodist church on Sunday, April 12, at 2:30 and burial was made in the Lorimor cemetery.

Vera Helen , the daughter of John and Myrtle McCants, was born in Madison county, Iowa, September 29, 1911.

As a little girl she lived on a farm near Creston where her father died in 1921. Seven years ago she moved to Winterset with her mother and sisters where she attended school until her health would permit her to go no longer.

She united with the Methodist church in Winterset two years ago but long before that she had been active in the Epworth League and interested in the Sunday school.

Close friends of hers never knew her to do a wrong or an unkind act.

Through her years of ill health she never complained but made every effort to do the things stronger girls were able to do.

Her heart has troubled her for years, and after a short illness she passed away very suddenly in her home on April 10, 1931, at the age of 19 years, six months and 12 days. She leaves beside her mother, her two sisters, Mrs. Cloyd Lamb, now of Winterset and Hazel in the home and her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Handley of Winterset and many other relatives and many friends.
