MABEL E. LAMPORT, WINTERSET

Mabel E. Lamport, 99, of Winterset died Aug. 15, 2007, at Madison Square Assisted Living Community in Winterset, attended by Middle River Hospice.

Visitation was held from 3–5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, at the Madison Square Community Room in Winterset. Memorials may be directed to the Madison County Historical Society or the Winterset Public Library.

Mabel was born Oct. 28, 1907, in Zumbrota, Goodhue County, Minn. She graduated from Lake City High School in Minnesota and later completed teacher’s training. Her marriage to Ralph Lamport took place Aug. 26, 1936, at home in Wabasha County, Minn. Together they owned and operated the West End Grocery/Texaco in Winterset for 40 years.

Mabel was an active volunteer for the Madison County Historical Society and gave tours for the John Wayne Birthplace. She was a member of the Episcopal Church and a longtime member of the Republican Women and was also an administrator for the Vidmar Foundation. She enjoyed playing cards and was an avid reader.

Mabel is survived by her son, Dennis Lamport and wife Jill of Indianola; two grandchildren, Brenda Butler and husband Rhett of Ft. Wayne, Ind., and David Lamport of Indianola; and one great-grandchild, Katelyn Ann Butler of Ft. Wayne, Ind.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William E. and Edith Gibbs Wellman; her husband, Ralph, in 1957; and a granddaughter, Deanne Blades.

Arrangements were handled by Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset.
