page 2DEATH OF MR. VAWTER.
The older citizens of this county will be pained to learn of the death of our former citizen, Mr. J. G. Vawter. The only information we have of the sad event is contained in the following dispatch:
Marengo, Ill., May 16.--A telegram was received here to-day from Helena, Montana, announcing the death, at Carroll, Montana, on the 9th, inst., of J. G. Vawter, a resident of this place doing business in Helena. No particulars were given. He left here about the middle of April with his son, Johnny, for Helena, joining the steamer Key West at Yankton, which was loaded with his own goods. He was one of the solid men of Helena, and was much respected here. The remains will be brought here for burial.
Mr. Vawter was not only a 'solid man,' but he was a good man. He had a large open heart, and no man in trouble went to him and came away empty handed. He was a man of large business capacity, and of public spirit-just the kind of a man who makes a valuable citizen, a kind neighbor and a warm friend. We extend to the bereaved family the heartfelt condolence of all their former acquaintancnes and friends, and they are many, in Madison county.
