James R. Myers, Truro

James R. Myers, 73, of Truro died April 25, 2001 of a heart attack at Clarke County Hospital in Osceola. Funeral services were April 30 at Kale Funeral Home in Truro. The Rev. Dennis Shepherd of Truro officiated the services. Following the services the body will be cremated and the cremated remains will be buried at a later date at Young cemetery in Truro.

He was born July 4, 1927 in Shawnee, Oklahoma to Arthur "John" Calvin and Cora Ellen (Bryant) Myers. He married Violet Swisher on December 24, 1944 in Des Moines. He was educated in east Texas then moved to Des Moines in 1943, to Bondurant in 1964 and then to Truro in 1967. He was a retired cemetery mason for Plasterers and Cement Union Local 21. He was a member of Local 21 of the Plasters of Cement Masons.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

Surviving relatives include his wife; one son Roger Myers and wife Rhonda of Truro; two daughters, Sandy Myers and husband Randy Mickle and Ruth Sorter and husband Bud, all of Des Moines; one sister-in-law, Pam Myers of Houston, Texas; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

JAMES R. MYERS

James R. Myers, son of Arthur Calvin “John” and Cora Ellen Bryant Myers, was born July 4, 1927, in Shawnee, Okla. and died April 25, 2001, at the Clarke County Hospital in Osceola. He was 73.

He grew up in East Texas and moved to Des Moines with his family when he was 16. He married Violet Swisher on Dec. 24, 1944, in Des Moines. They became the parents of three children, Sandy, Roger and Ruth.

Mr. and Mrs. Myers lived in Des Moines until 1964, when they moved to Bondurant. They moved to Truro in 1967.

He worked as a cement mason for the Plasterers and Cement Masons Union Local No. 21 in Des Moines until he retired in 1989. He would have been a 40-year member of Local No. 21 in October of this year.

Mr. Myers had many hobbies and was always a perfectionist when it came to things he was doing. He liked building houses and built his home in Truro. He also helped build his son’s home.

He did leather work and made a saddle for his wife. He also liked woodworking and painting pictures on glass. He loved working with his horses and liked to garden when he found the time.

Preceding him in death were his parents and two brothers, Raymond E. and A. C. Myers Jr.

Mr. Myers is survived by his wife, Violet Myers of Truro; a son, Roger Myers and his wife, Rhonda Myers, of Truro; two daughters, Sandy Myers and her husband, Randy Mickle, and Ruth Sorter and her husband, Bud Sorter, all of Des Moines; seven grandchildren, Kyle Myers of Truro, Dawn Woods of Osceola, Jerry Barron Miller and Karla K. Crawford, both of Des Moines, Amy Bassett of DeSoto, Kristina Soares of Norwalk and Katie Myers of Ames; six great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Pam Myers of Houston, Texas; other relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services were April 30 at Kale Funeral Home in Truro, the Rev. Dennis Shepherd of the United Methodist Church in Truro officiating. Pennie Gonseth, organist, played The Old Rugged Cross and In The Garden.

Casket bearers were Randy Mickle, Bud Sorter, Kyle Myers, Jerry Barron Miller, Greg Bassett and Mark Woods. Honorary bearers were Larry Aschan and Walter Brant Jr. Cremation will follow the services and interment of the cremains will be at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the family.
