HATTEL RUTH DIED HERE ON SATURDAY

Had Operated Drug Store in Winterset Since 1931

Hattel Ruth, who had owned and operated the Ruth Drug store here since 1931, died at his home on North First Street Saturday, Sept. 25. He was 57 years of age.

Mr. Ruth was found dead in his bed, when his wife returned home about 3:30 p.m. Saturday from a shopping trip. He had left a farewell note to her.

Coroner Paul Eggleston was called to investigate. He took tests and sent them away for analysis to determine cause of death, but had received no report early this week.

William Hattel Ruth was a life-long resident of Winterset. He was born here May 28, 1897, a son of Joseph and Maria Lila Ruth. He graduated from the Winterset high school with the class of 1915 and became a registered pharmacist after graduating from the Babcock College of Pharmacy in Des Moines.

Mr. Ruth had the distinction of spending all the working years of his life in the same drug store in Winterset. He went to work there as a senior in high school, when the store was owned by A. N. Smith, and except for his time in the military service he was connected continuously with that same business until his death. He purchased the store from Smith in 1931.

He served in the U. S. army during World War I and was a charter member of Green-Rogers post of the American Legion. He had been a member of the First Presbyterian church since 1912, of the Masonic lodge and the Iowa Pharmaceutical association.

Mr. Ruth married on Oct. 27, 1929 to Miss Pansie B. Landis of Peru who survives him. He also leaves a son, William Joseph now 9 years old; a sister, Mrs. Della Shreves of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and a brother, Clyde E. Ruth of Clinton.

Funeral services were held here Tuesday from the Richards Funeral home, conducted by the Rev. George DeF. Fisher pastor of the First Presbyterian church. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery with military honors by the American Legion.
