Services for John H. Proudfoot, 63, a retired postal letter carrier, were at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 9th at the Hamilton Funeral Home in Des Moines. Burial was in Laurel Hill Cemetery in Des Moines.
Mr. Proudfoot was born at St. Charles, January 31, 1891. His father was Henry Rice Proudfoot who died in 1909 and his mother Mrs. Maggie Baird Proudfoot in 1937. John, with his parents moved to Des Moines when he was a small boy. He attended school in Des Moines. He with his parents, joined the Asbury Methodist church and were devoted members for years.
Mr. Proudfoot was a letter carrier in Des Moines for 37 1-2 years, retiring Dec. 31, 1949. He was widely known in the southwest Des Moines business district which was his route for 25 years. A veteran of World War I, Mr. Proudfoot was a member of Post 738 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the 40 and 8 Club. He was an only child, the only survivors are fourteen cousins; 5 who live in Iowa, 5 in Nebraska, 2 in Missouri, 1 in Kansas and 1 in California. They are Mrs. Faith Baird Herman, Mrs. Margaret Baird King, Mr. John Stewart Baird, Mrs.Edith Baird Rider and Mr. Rolla R. Baird, all of Des Moines; Mrs. Margaret Blackwood White of Edison, Nebraska, Mr. James Clyde Baird of Omaha, Nebraska, Mr. John Roy Miller of Lincoln, Nebraska, Miss Nan A. Miller and Miss Margaret A. Miller, both of Seward, Nebraska; Mrs. Venna Stewart, Tindall and Mrs. Alice Stewart Rieman, both of Salisbury, Missouri; Mrs. Margaret Lewis Chambers of Lawrence, Kansas; and Mrs. Robenna Baird Iseminger of Fernando, California.
The Rev. Edward Pruitt, former pastor of the Asbury Church was the minister in charge. Mrs. Guwda Don Horne, a former neighbor and friend of the Proudfoot family was the soloist; E. A. Campbell, Phillip J. Davis, B. J. Gilbride, Sam Caleguere, Jim Stewart and John A. Edgreen were pallbearers. Three represented the Post Office and three represented the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
