EDITH ALMA HOSKINS

Edith Alma Cook was born near Bear Creek, twelfth month, third, 1868. She passed away first month, twenty-fifth, 1954 at the age of 85 years one month and 22 days.

She was the daughter of Isaac and Hannah Chantry Cook. Her father was a Friends minister and during her girlhood she lived in several localities including Casey and Waukee.

Edith was united in marriage with John Hoskins, eleventh month, sixteenth, 1892 at Waukee, Iowa. John and Edith lived near Pleasant Plain for a few months with his family. They then went to their own home near Wright Iowa, where they resided for eight years.

In 1901 they moved to Waukee where they lived for twenty years, after which they returned to the Earlham community, where she made her home until after the death of her husband. Failing health soon made it impossible for her to live alone. She then went to the Wayne Thomas home for four years. In 1948, her health became so impaired that she needed constant professional care and she was taken to a nursing home in Des Moines.

She had longed to return to the place of her childhood and thoroughly enjoyed her association with the Earlham Meeting and the community. She was an elder in the Meeting for many years.

She was a devoted mother and friend and was interested in all religious and worthwhile activities. Her many friends will long remember her for her sweet and winsome disposition.

She is survived by four sons, George of Earlham, Delbert of Des Moines, Wilbur of Pomona, California, and Russell of Earlham; and one daughter, Carol Thomas, also of Earlham. There are also nine grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas and sister Martha Andrew. Three brothers and two sisters survive, Rev. Marcus H. Cook of Vancouver, Washington; Reuben Cook of Kirby, Oregon; Mrs. Elva Jessup of Union, Iowa; and Mrs. Rosa Howard of Santa Ana, California.
