CHARLES GRAVES DIED WEDNESDAY

Death Occurs During Sleep for Well-Known Local Merchant

Charles A. Graves, a well-known Winterset merchant, died at his home in Winterset early Wednesday morning, March 3rd at the age of 75 years. Mr. Graves had been confined to his home since Sunday, but death came while he was sleeping about 7 o'clock this morning.

Mr. Graves was a native of Lucas county, being born in Newburn, December 18, 1878, but went to Chariton when a boy and lived there until he moved to Perry. He started in the merchantile business in Perry in 1903 and had been in that business since then. He was married to Bertha E. Mannatt of Perry Oct. 19, 1904. He and his wife moved to Winterset in 1934 and this town has since been their home, he owning and operating the Chas A. Graves dry goods store here.

Donald Graves has been associated in business with him since World War II and the firm is now the Chas. A. Graves & Son store.

Mr. Graves is survived by his widow, and two children, Mrs. M. E. Jenkins of Perry and Donald Graves of Winterset. He also leaves four grandchildren, James Foster of Humboldt, Mrs. James Haas of Perry and Penny and Kirk Graves of Winterset; a brother Willis N. Graves of Logan, who is now in Florida, and a sister, Mrs. Sara Minnie Hickman of Pasadena, California. He also leaves 5 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. at the First Presbyterian church in Winterset by the pastor, the Rev. George D. Fisher. Mr. Graves has been an active member of the local church for a number of years. Burial will be held that afternoon at the Violet Hill Cemetery in Perry.
