D. R. ROBINSON DIES

D. R. Robinson, prominent Osceola citizen, died last Saturday at the state hospital at Clarinda. He was 64 years old.

Mr. Robinson had lived at Patterson as a boy, and had relatives in Madison county. He was an uncle of Mrs. Ralph Giddings of Winterset and a brother to C. J. Robinson of Scott township. He lived most of his life in Osceola and had served as mayor of that city.

Mr. Robinson’s death followed an illness of years’ standing. Funeral services were held Monday at Osceola where he was buried.

Coordinator's notes: He is listed in WPA cemetery records as "D. Russel" but in the 1870 Madison County census he is listed as "Asbury" and in the 1880 Madison County census as "Asberry R.". His Iowa Death Certificate has "D. Russell". Apparently, as an adult, he abandoned the "Asbury" given him by his parents and with no official record of his birth, he could take on whatever name he wanted.

Funeral Services For D. R. Robinson Held Here Monday; Was Former Mayor

Funeral services for D. R. Robinson, 64, former Osceola business man and one-time mayor, were held from the Webster Funeral Home, Monday afternoon conducted by Rev. F. C. McCallon.

Mr. Robinson, commonly called “Doc”, was born on a farm near Winterset, July 11, 1869 and passed away April 7 at the age of 64 years, 8 months and 27 days.

He was the youngest of nine children born to David and Temperence Robinson. The family, with the exception of a brother, C. J. Robinson of Winterset, all preceded him in death.

At the age of four years he moved with his family to Patterson, where he received his education in the public schools, developing a marked talent as an artist and painter.

With his brother, William, he came to Osceola about the year 1889, where they owned and operated a studio and music store, known as the Robinson Studio until 1916, when the brother passed away. The shock of the separation seemed to crush his spirits and he never seemed the same happy, carefree man he had previously been.

Mr. Robinson always held the highest respect for Christianity and was a member of the church until called to his reward. He was a loyal member of the Masonic lodge and Eastern Star chapter and was active in civic affairs. He was mayor of Osceola for two terms, filling that office until failing health forced him to retire.

He leaves to mourn his departure his brother C. J. Robinson, three sisters-in-law and a host of relatives and friends.
