LURANA CLARK DIED ON SUNDAY

Well-Known Woman Had Been in Failing Health Past 10 Weeks

Mrs. Lurana Clark, a well-known resident of Jackson township, died Sunday, June 27 at the home of her son, Kenneth Clark after an illness of 10 weeks. She was 68 years of age.

Mrs. Clark was the former Lurana Mae Gillespie, daughter of Robert and Elvia Guye Gillespie. She was a granddaughter of George W. Guye, one of the first pioneers of Madison County.

She was born near Chariton in Lucas county, but moved to Madison county with her parents in 1890. She attended Dexter high school, the Simpson Conservatory of Music at Indianola, and Iowa State Teachers' college at Cedar Falls. She then spent several years teaching in Adair and Madison county schools.

She was married Feb. 21, 1912 to Charlie H. Clark of Adair county. They were parents of one son, Kenneth.

Her husband died in 1940. Since then she had taught school at Patterson, Inwood an Matlock, but was forced to retire recently by failing health.

Surviving are her son, Kenneth; two granddaughters; a sister, Mrs. Geraldine Hammond of Dexter and a brother Raymond Gillespie of near Pitzer.

Funeral services were held Tuesday from the Pitzer United Presbyterian church, conducted the the Rev. Charles Bellus. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.

Lurana G. Clark Passes Away

Funeral Held Tuesday at Pitzer Church

Lurana Mae Gillespie, a granddaughter of one of Madison county’s early pioneers, George Guye, was born to Robert A. and Elvia Guye Gillespie, November 20, 1885 at Chariton, Iowa.

In 1890 she moved with her parents to Jackson township, Madison county, Iowa. She attended the public schools of Madison county, Dexter high school, Simpson College of Music and Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls. In early life she spent many years teaching in the schools of Madison and Adair counties.

On February 21, 1912, she was united in marriage to Charles H. Clark of Adair county, Iowa. To this union was born one son, Kenneth, who now resides on his mother’s farm at Pitzer.

At an early age she united with the United Presbyterian church of Pitzer and since has been a continuous member of that church. She was an active church worker, a Woman’s Farm Bureau member, being once a member of the County Chorus, a Phythian sister, a member of the Winterset American Legion Auxillary.

Her husband preceded her in death December 9, 1940. After his death she continued to manage the farm for several years. After retiring from the farm she worked as bookkeeper at a lumber yard in Adel.

---------------------- after which she went back to teaching at Matlock, at the conclusion of the school year that she became ill with a heart ailment and after an illness of ten weeks she passed away in her sleep, at the home of her son, Kenneth, Sunday morning, June the 27, 1954.

In passing she leaves to mourn her loss her son Kenneth and wife and two granddaughters, Patricia Ann and Peggy Jean Clark, of whom she was very proud; one sister, Mrs. Geraldine Hammond of Dexter, with whom she had made her home the last few years, and one brother, Raymond Gillespie, of Dexter; other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were conducted at the Pitzer church Tuesday p.m. at 2:30, with burial at Winterset.
